Running on the snow

I have no clue why I continue to pay attention to the weather forecasters in Cincinnati.  I don’t believe that there is one who can tell me what will happen today.  I do have to pay some attention to them as I only  run outside, so I need to have some sense of what the weather will be like, but I need to pay more attention to the actual conditions.

So where did that slight rant come from?  Well, on Sunday I ran 9 miles with my second running group.  I had planned on doing only 6-8, but since the group was doing more, so did I.  I had planned on going out Monday as well, but the forecast was such that instead I planned to get some Christmas shopping done and then run Tues/Wed/Thurs instead.

Well, as it turned, the weather on Monday was cold, but otherwise fine.  I could have easily gotten a good number of miles in.  But instead, I waited until Tuesday.  Tuesday was supposed to be the day we got the first major snow fall, major for Cincinnati at least.  Instead we got less than an inch.

With snow on the ground, I set out to run 6 miles.  I love to run when it’s snowing, but the snow had finished, and this was little to no fun.  I ran on the street as much as possible as the streets were clear.  The sidewalks were another story.  So long as no one tried to clear their sidewalk, it was fine.  But when people tried to clear the sidewalk it got slightly dangerous.  As it was getting colder, the semi melted snow started to freeze again.  I am happy to report that I only hit ice two times, both downhill.

Here’s hoping for a better time today.  The weather is supposed to be in the 40’s today!

Monthly Recap

And then some….

Thankfully I have been keeping track of my miles on Sparkpeople.com so that I can keep up my recaps.  Long story short here, I have been doing the same old running over the past few weeks, with the exception of Thanksgiving week and the week after.  Thanksgiving week I was getting ready for a race, and the following week was vacation, so those weeks were off.  Otherwise I have been trying to get in 50-60 miles a week.  I can see that lacking a gym membership is going to make this a challenge if the weather continues as it was.

Week Ending 11/8 – 57 Miles

Week Ending 11/15 – 64 Miles

Week Ending 11/22 – 57 Miles

Week Ending 11/29 – 17.5 Miles

Week Ending 12/6 – 41 Miles

Week Ending 12/13 – 48 Miles

Total for the Recap – 284.5 Miles

Ongoing Total – 389.5 Miles

Place of the week – Purple People Bridge.  This opened to foot traffic only back in 2003.  It is usually the starting point for most of my long runs which makes my start harder than needed, but on certain days, it’s worth it.

Two Firsts

Long time and no posts, I know.  But I did want to blog about two firsts for me.

  1. Reaching my first goal for the year.  You might remember that back in October I laid out a number of goals for myself for the upcoming 12 months.  The first test of these goals was the Cincinnati Thanksgiving Day Race.  This was the 99th running of the race (can’t wait for 100 next year), and is a 10k loop through downtown Cincinati and Northern Kentucky.  My goal for this year was a sub 42 in the 10k, which I corralled a few others into taking as their goal as well.  Long story short here is I crashed through that goal finishing in 40:18.  Now I need to try for a sub 40.
  2. Exercising on vacation has never been a strong suit for me.  Most of my vacations tend to be in a city, so there is so much else to do that I tend to use walking as my exercise during this time.  But my most recent trip to St John USVI was different.  Going to a resort on a small island provides one with enough down time to get in some exercise pretty easily.  I was able to get in 47+ miles over the course of the week plus.  The down side was that most of it was inside on the treadmile.  I so hate running on those damned things.

Now I just need to keep up the blogging.  I should have more to blog about given that training for the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon is starting in ernest now.

Site of the week:  Grammers Restaurant.  A Cincinnati landmark orginally opened in 1872 which has recently reopened.  There was a great launch for Christian Morlein’s Winter Beer a few weeks ago where they opened special.  They had been closed due to the freak wind storm.

Running Week in Review

Monday — 10 miles

Tuesday — 6 miles

Wednesday — 10 miles

Thursday — 6 miles

Saturday — 20 miles

Total — 52 miles

Cummulative — 105 miles

So back to a relatively normal week for me.  I will be trying to stay in the 50-60 mile range going forward which will hopefully keep me a little more energized.  The only bad part about this week has been the lack of daylight at night, which is now going to be even worse.  My long run was very good.  I finished with sub 8:00s for most of the last 6 miles which felt great.

Place of the week: http://www.cincinnati-transit.net/lunken.html  The bike trail at the Lunken airport is a great place to get in a flat run close to my house.  It’s a 5 mile trail that circles the airport, so you get an up close and personal view of landing and departing planes.  After a long week of running the hills in Cincinnati, it’s a great place to get in a flat run.  My main issue with this site is the boredom. I find it very hard to run this course, especially the stretch on Wilmer.  That and there is very little water on the trail.  But it’s hard to beat for a single loop long run.

Running Week In Review

In an attempt to continue my running, I am planning to keep myself accountable by blogging about each weeks runs.  This is the first update, hopefully of many more

Sunday — 13.1

Monday — 6

Tuesday — 10

Wednesday — 6

Thursday — 6

Satuday — 18

Total — 53

Cummulative — 53

This was my first week back from tapering after the marathon.  Overall I felt decent.  I was tired on Thursday and didn’t plan to run, but I ate like crap all day, so I needed a run to help me feel better about that.  I’ve already blogged about Columbus.  Monday and Tuesday were pretty uneventful.  My Wednesday run was with the group and went well.  We did the bridges and into the International Friendship Park, followed by a quick beer.  Saturday was my first long run in a while.  I went out faster than I normally do with the thought that this will help my marathon times.  The first 11 were by myself, although for the first 5, I had my iPod with me.  Met up with the group at mile 11 to finish out.  Overall it was an OK week with a strong finish.

Place of the week:  http://dynamic.cinci-parks.org/cgi-bin/parks.cgi/park_desc?park_id=55  This is a link for the International Friendship Park on the Cincinnati waterfront.  This park was opened in 2003 and is a wonderful addition to the riverfront.  I especially love the winding trails as you run through the gardens of the world.  It’s especially beautiful first thing in the morning when the lights come on and it’s still dark out.  If you haven’t visted this park, make a point the next time you are down there.  It is near the Boathouse and offers free parking.

My New 10 Miler

A number of my runs consist of 10+ miles during any given week.  I have had a favorite route that I have been using for a long while which was simply and out and back from my house to the Krohn Conservatory in Eden Park.  I have loved this route for a long while since it 1) starts from home, 2) goes through some beautiful areas, 3) replicates major pieces of the Pig course and 4) is quite challenging with perhaps 1.5 – 2 miles of flat.  So what’s the issue.  Well my main issue with the route is that it’s a true out and back.  I run five miles from my house and five miles back, so at the worst I would be 5 miles from home.  Not bad when I’m feeling good, but on other days, I might want to cut it short and not realize it before it’s too late.

So, I know have a new favorite 10 miler.  It incorporates all of my favorite things (except Eden Park) in a more challenging course that at most leaves me 3.5 miles from home.  Starting from my house I do the typical run to Erie through HP Square. I then take Berry to Observatory to Edwards to Grandin.  Then to Madison via the Grandin Loop.  On Madison, I make it to Baker.  This is the 5 mile mark, which also happens to be the 3 mile mark with a direct shot from my house.  For an 8 miler, I can run straight back, but for 10, I repeat my route home.  There’s plenty of water along the way so it’s perfect.  It’s a little hilly, so it shouldn’t be an everyday thing.  The elevation chart below is not perfect as I didn’t run home last night, but miles 1-8 are spot on.

Recent Races

It’s been a long long summer of running.  After reviewing my Garmin, I realized that between the Flying Pig and Chicago, I logged 1000+ miles running.  Just running, no other activity included there!  So with all that, you’d expect some awesome results.  Well my results were mostly awesome but not entirely.

May 2008 — Flying Pig.  The hometown favorite race.  It’s such a fun race, and I got a personal best of 3:44, taking a full 15 minutes off my previous best.  In full disclosure that is an adjusted time as the course was rerouted due to a fire which extended the route 1/4 mile.

August 2008 — Hyde Park 5.  A recent addition to the running world in Cincinnati.  It was on a Thursday evening, which was perfect for me.  I hate Saturday races since they interrupt my training runs, and Sunday races mean that I have no fun the entire weekend.  This was a PB for a 5K in 20:49.  Never in my life did I think that I’d run that fast, but now I want more!

September 2008 — State to State Half Marathon.  Never have done this race before, but I registered to force me to taper prior to Chicago.  It’s held in Oxford, OH about 1 hour from Cincinnati.  The route is basically and out and back going from Oxford to Indiana and back with two detours on the way out into sub-divisions.  I had a goal of 1:44 starting out which would mirror my Chicago pace.  As I started everyone was passing me, so stupid me, I starting going faster, knowing full well that I’d bonk.  Well the turnaround came, and I was still going strong, so I picked it up.  I finished in a 1:37 with a negative split.  My first 1/2 so it would be a PB regardless.

October 2008 — Bank of America Chicago Marathon.  Oh Chicago, my favorite city.  Well my favorite city wasn’t too kind back.  The starting temperature was 68 degrees, but I decided to stay with the 3:30 pace group.  I felt OK at the start, but looking back it wasn’t going to be my day that day.  My head hust wasn’t there.  I made it to mile 18 before losing it.  As I was taking a gel, I literally lost it.  But I came back and kept going.  Over the last 12K I lost 23 minutes.  At least the other people that I knew at the race either dropped out or were off their PB’s as well.  And then today I understand that they raised the warning level to Red somewhere along the way.  I must have been paying very little attention at that point.  But I will be back!

October 2008 — Columbus Half Marathon.  The weekend after Chicago, what am I thinking!  I put in some slow miles the week in between just to keep moving.  After two trips to Columbus that weekend (one to pickup my stuff and one for the event), I was ready to go.  My goal was a 1:35.  This would give me a new PB AND it would get me in corral B for Chicago next year.  The cool temp really helped.  I started with the 3:10 pace group and everything was going great.  My shoelace came untied at mile 2 though.  Never has happened before.  I ran off to the side, retied it and started back.  Now I have a problem with catching up too fast after a stop, but this time I took it easy and within a half mile I was back with the group.  Somewhere between miles 4 and 5, I decided that I was feeling awesome and I would pick it up.  And I kept it up.  At mile 10 or so, I realized that I was close to a sub 1:30, so I picked it up some more.  I ended up at a 1:30:11 which was great and a new PB by 7+ minutes.

Next Race: Cincinnati Thanksgiving Day Race

My Nov 2008 – Oct 2009 Goals

My Goals for the next 12 months:

  • Actually update this blog with some regularity.
  • 5K — Break 20 minutes.  This should be doable.  There are lots of 5K’s in the area and I am only 45 seconds off this time.
  • 10K — Achieve a Personal Best (PB) with a sub 42.  This might be more difficult.  There are few 10K’s in the area, and my current PB is 6 minutes off that, but it’s from a few years ago and before I got serious.
  • 1/2 Marathon — Sub 1:30 for a new PB.  Again this might be hard.  There are few halfs in the area and since I do the Full at the Flying Pig, that takes one away
  • Marathon — Just a PB.  I don’t care if it’s one second better or 14 minutes, I just want to do better.  But a 3:20 would be nice since that will be my new qualifying time for Boston.

A favor

This post is only somewhat related to the overall topic of this blog.  But it does deal with Cincinnati, just not my running in Cincinnati.  There is a book coming out this fall that will contain pictures of Cincinnati from pictures people submitted.  Please take a minute to visit my pictures, and if you like them, please vote for them

This weekend I had planned to run 24 miles, getting back over the 20 mile mark for the first time since the Pig.  The day before, some friends decided to do the OTR 5K run/walk, so I decided that I would walk the 5K following my run.  I started out my run at 6am from Sawyer Point and ran upto the Hyde Park Kroger (6M).  I met up with a small group of people from our Fall Program and put in around 10 miles.  At this point, I’m dying.  This was the first really warm day of the season, and it had to be for a long run, of course.  I am drenched and tired, but I needed to get back downtown to meet up with my friends by 9:45 to register for the race.  I make my way down quite slowly, but in one wet piece.

We walk the 5K at a quite easy pace.  When we get to the finish line, the woman at the finish asks if I was a walker.  I said yes, and then she announced that I was the number 2 male walker!  Woo Hoo!  Actually the three of us all were in the top 5.  There were some mix ups during the awards, and I was announced at the number 4 male, but I still got a medal.  The medals were really cool Rookwood Pottery tiles made especially for the race.

When I got home, I checked my email, and there was an emai from someone in our small group.  She sent out a reminder about a discount for a local race, but at the end mentioned my plan for running.  And she finished with “Rob defines strong”  Wow, what a compliment,  I always thought that I defined crazy when it came to running, but someone else can have that title.
